Assisteens Auxiliary

Assistance League founder, Anne Banning, always felt that it was fine to serve youth, but better yet to let youth serve! Membership in Assisteens Auxiliary is open to students in the Newport-Mesa school district entering into the 7th through the 12th grade. Currently, there are 100 members who represent five middle schools and five high schools in Orange County.

The purpose of the auxiliary is to develop a sense of community responsibility, self-reliance, personal responsibility, poise, public speaking and leadership skills in young men and women in the program.   Assisteens volunteer in the Thrift Shop, Treasures on ConsignmentOperation School Bell and Kids on the Block philanthropic programs, support other Assistance League of Newport-Mesa endeavors such as the Children's Book Drive and approved Community Outreach programs.  In addition to philanthropy, there are several leadership opportunities available by grade level and the overall Governing Body.  Assisteens are given the opportunity to attend the annual leadership conference held at the end of June each year at California State University, Long Beach.

Assisteens meet on a monthly basis from September through June -- either all together or by grade level. Meeting times vary. Community service activities and philanthropic projects take place throughout the year during and outside of regular meetings.  As recognition for all of their community efforts on behalf of Assistance League of Newport-Mesa, Senior Assisteens are invited to participate in the annual Medallion Recognition Ball.

To remain in good standing, our 7th & 8th grade students volunteer a minimum of 25 hours and our high school students volunteer a minimum of 30 hours per year. In the 2014/2015 year, Assisteens of Assistance League of Newport-Mesa donated 4,522 hours of service or approximately 42 hours per Assisteen.

Applications for membership are accepted in March and April, for the year beginning in June and is open to 30 students per grade level.
